Laser Refractive Surgery
Laser refractive surgery is one of the most common procedures an ophthalmologist performs. Perhaps the best-known example of such surgery is LASIK. This widely performed refractive surgery uses a laser to reshape the cornea to address common conditions such as astigmatism, farsightedness (hyperopia) and nearsightedness (myopia). Laser refractive surgery can also be used to implant a lens inside the eye.
Cataract Consultation
Cataracts are marked by a clouding and thickening of the eye’s lens. Often considered by many to be unavoidable as one ages, cataracts typically occur gradually and can happen at any point in a person’s life. Regular eye exams by an optometrist are vital in discovering and diagnosing cataracts and monitoring their progression. Depending on a host of factors, an eye doctor might determine that a wait-and-see approach is the best avenue when a patient has early cataracts.
Co-Management
The human body is a vast, complex and inter-connected organism. What affects one area of the body can also adversely impact the eyes as well. Thyroid diseases, multiple sclerosis (MS) and diabetes are just a few examples of diseases that don’t seem to be directly related to the eyes, but that can negatively affect their health. Effective and skilled co-management of these health conditions is very important as part of a long-term wellness plan for any patient.
